Formigas : breve monografia.

Abstract

Os ilhéus das Formigas são um conjunto de rochas situado a cerca de 20 milhas a NE da ilha de Sta Maria e 34 milhas a SE da ilha de S. Miguel. Estes ilhéus constituem, juntamente com os baixios adjacentes, o Banco das Formigas, que tem cerca de 7 milhas de extensão e 3 milhas de largura. Este banco é constituído por um maciço submarino ao qual também pertence o Banco ou Rochas do Dollabarat, e fica compreendido entre os paralelos 37'14'N e 37'17'N e os meridianos 24'43'W e 24'47'W. Embora já conhecido dos navegadores portugueses do século XV, conforme se depreende do texto de Gaspar Frutuoso, a primeira descrição rigorosa da posição e geografia do Banco das Formigas é provavalmente a de Vidal (1849). Informações mais completas e actualizadas podem ser encontradas no Roteiro do Arquipélago dos Açores (Instituto Hidrográfico, 1981).
