Cuidador informal secundário : papéis familiares

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Human aging is a reality worldwide. At the same time, older people exhibit co-morbidities and functional dependency, which highlights informal carers’ responsibilities in order to ensure efficient and effective responses that will respond to the older ones’ needs and promote their quality of life. Caring for an old person at home determines a huge number of changes among family dynamics and in the roles assumed by informal carers. In this context, and considering the fact that Social Gerontoloy is an expanding field, we intend to improve its body of knowledge. Therefore it seems relevant for us to meet secondary informal carers’ roles in social and familiar terms, when they are in presence of an old dependent person within their familiar context. It is our purpose to contribute for a better assistance for old dependent people, empowering secondary carer’s potentialities and capacities. A quantitative and descriptive study has been conducted; being the sample compounded by 168 secondary informal carers of 114 older dependent people living in Angra do Heroísmo. Data collection has been made through with one survey applied to the secondary informal carer and one press inquiries about the old dependent person. In terms of social and demographic attributes, the role of being a secondary informal carer is mainly assumed by adult active women during more than 40 hours per week and who co-habit with the old dependent person. Motivations for assuming this role is love and tenderness, and the wish not to institutionalize the familiar who is old and dependent. These secondary informal carers recognize the relevance of the therapeutic role in their lives, maintaining interfamiliar and social relationships. With this study we intend to raise awareness among nurses for the need to include other family members of the old dependent person into intervention and care plan. It also highlights the need for promoting links between health care settings, namely primary, secondary and tertiary care, in order to identify and solve each family’s specific needs.
