The dichotomy rural/urban, which prevailed until recently in functionalist and Marxist sociological analyses was excessively polarized. The increasing communication between rural and urban settings has made such polarization even more obsolete and the term «rurbanization» captures more accurately the present scenario. In the Azores, the trend toward rurbanization is also noticeable, as our survey has shown. A continuous attraction of the city over the rural areas, though in diminishing in numbers, still takes place, but an increase in the level of communication between both settings is also taking form. The study shows, however, an easier integration in city life than expected, particularly among women. Contrary to what was expected, the anonymity of city life does not surface as a perceived trait among the immigrants from the rural areas.
