Empreendedorismo feminino : exemplos dos Açores

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Entrepreneurship is an international phenomenon that has been intensifying over the years. There are numerous definitions of entrepreneurship, according to numerous authors, from several areas. However, none of the definitions is presented as being the correct definition, and the meaning of entrepreneurship is presented as a junction of numerous predominant definitions of several areas. Thus, very briefly, entrepreneurship can be seen as the creation of one's own job. With regard to the history of entrepreneurship, we can see that the male gender always dominated the area, so much so that the majority of studies carried out on the subject were male entrepreneurs. Female entrepreneurship is a theme that only began to flourish from a few years ago. However, women try to equalize their rights with men, from a very early age. This indicates that there has always been an inequality between the male and female sexes. Inequality that, fortunately, with the passage of time has been narrowing. Over the years, there have been some significant changes that have allowed women to be integrated into the labour market. That woman who served only to take care of the children and the domestic work, nowadays it does not exist anymore. These days, women are capable of bringing together various tasks - such as dealing with the education of their children, handling domestic work and working life – thus reconciling their personal and professional lives. Nevertheless, although the female sex has proved numerous times and in many ways how capable it is, it is still not at all comparable to the male sex, and there is still a discrimination between both sexes. It is important to note that, for women, entrepreneurship is seen not only as a form of employability but also as a personal aspiration that allows them to have some independence and personal growth. However, it is still not as easy for women as it is for men to dominate in the entrepreneurial sector. Thus, the main objective of this dissertation is to identify the position in which women are in the labour market and what their greatest difficulties have been presented in order to achieve the position they hold today.
