Turismo de natureza : comportamentos e perceção do impacto ambiental

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The touristic strategy of this region defines the Azores destination with base on nature and presents the landscape as pristine, sea and marine animals as unique, creating an image centered on icons of landscape and Azorean wildlife. The present work analyses the tourist demand in S. Miguel focusing on the perception of the impacts caused by their activities, their values and attitudes towards environmental problems, using the conceptual framework of New Environmental Paradigm (NEP). A survey proposed to 376 tourists characterized their values, their pre-visit behavior, the reasons for choosing the destination and their perception of the potential impacts of their visit. Segmentation based on the NEP identified that 63% of the sample has ecocentric and environmentally friendly values. Of the four clusters identified with the NEP scale, two of them stand out as Environmentally Friendly Tourists. In both cases there is a predominance of young tourists, 63% and 43%, respectively, national and southern Europe, who show a high perception of negative environmental impacts, in particular the excess of visitors, litter and natural vegetation degradation. Introduction of zoning in the most sensitive areas and reinforcing environmental information and introducing rules and codes of conduct for the group most sensitive to change their behavior will increase the sustainability of the tourism activity.
