Crocodylia : Uma longa história de sucesso evolutivo

Abstract

Neste artigo pretende-se descrever a história evolutiva dos crocodilos bem como as espécies actualmente existentes no Mundo referindo os principais aspectos da sua ecologia tais como distribuição geográfica, tamanhos máximos e eventual perigosidade para humanos, habitats e alimentação, aspectos reprodutivos, conservação e produção para consumo humano. A Ordem Crocodylia divide-se em três famílias, Alligatoridae, Crocodylidae e Gavialidae que compreendem 23 espécies vivas distribuídas por todos os continentes com excepção da Europa e da Antárctica. São um dos grupos de répteis mais antigos com um processo evolutivo relativamente bem conhecido e que data desde há 320 milhões de anos tendo sobrevivido às maiores crises ecológicas do Planeta causadoras de catastróficas extinções em massa. Os Crocodylia são um exemplo de sucesso evolutivo e resiliência morfológica que atravessam a história da vida na Terra, da evolução reptiliana e até se incluem fortemente na evolução humana Holocénica com considerável impacto mesmo nos dias de hoje.
