Peixes Marinhos dos Açores: Uma Coleccção de Ilustrações

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Blennies are scaleless fishes, with an elongated and slimy body. They have a single dorsal fin with both hard and soft rays. The strong pelvic fins have only a few rays. Most of the species have small tentacles on the head. Blennies are small to medium size fishes living on rocky shores, generally in shallow water. Sexual dimorphism is apparent in some species during the reproductive season. Males establish territories to where females go to spawn. They guard and take care of the eggs until the hatching of the embryos. These species have a rich behavioral repertoire which has been well studied. Some of the species show extraordinary adaptations which enable them to spend many hours out of the water.
