Abordagem diagnóstica em laboratório de neurofisiologia

Abstract

This curricular internship, carried out in the Neurology Department of ULS Matosinhos EPE, aimed to deepen practical knowledge in the differential diagnosis of parasomnias, sleep-related epilepsies, and other movement disorders. It was developed within a neurological setting due to the specificity of referral patterns and the increased diagnostic complexity associated with this patient population. In addition to the observation and analysis of video polysomnography (vPSG) studies and the interpretation of EEG in a sleep context, this experience provided direct exposure to the challenges of daily laboratory practice. It also included the sharing of difficulties and the learning of strategies, alongside experienced professionals, to support the approach to complex patients—particularly those with neurological conditions, in whom diagnostic complexity is often increased by the coexistence of multiple levels of interference, namely clinical and technical. This hands-on experience contributed to the consolidation of competencies in the reading and discussion of polysomnographic studies, to increased sensitivity in video analysis, and, crucially, to the ability to identify, minimize, and interpret artifacts that may interfere with signal analysis. Overall, this internship represented a valuable opportunity for professional development, contributing to the ongoing refinement of competencies in the field of Sleep Medicine.
