Embalagens Sustentáveis: Boas Práticas no Setor Agroalimentar

Abstract

Sustainability in the agri-food sector has gained global prominence, with packaging playing a central role in this ecological transition. This dissertation explores best practices and the challenges associated with the adoption of sustainable packaging across four key agri-food categories: meat, fruit and vegetables, bakery/pastry, and dairy, with a focus on their applicability to Portuguese Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs).The analysis reveals that, despite significant challenges, there are clear opportunities for implementing innovative and sustainable solutions. Identified practices include the use of biodegradable and compostable materials (e.g., PLA – polylactic acid), the adoption of active and intelligent packaging (e.g., oxygen absorbers and freshness indicators), and the promotion of the circular economy through reverse logistics systems. Successful international case studies, such as Hilton Food Group (meat), Nature’s Pride (fruit and vegetables), Bimbo (bakery), and Danone (dairy), demonstrate the feasibility of these approaches.Acknowledging the specific constraints faced by agri-food SMEs — such as cost sensitivity, lack of recycling and composting infrastructure, and the need to comply with legislation like Directive (EU) 2019/904 — the study proposes a gradual and collaborative strategy based on education and awareness, financial incentives, and investment in infrastructure. Within this framework, a self-assessment model is presented, enabling companies to diagnose their maturity level in adopting sustainable practices and to guide strategic decision-making.The study concludes that the transition to sustainable packaging is a complex but necessary journey, achievable through integrated strategies and effective public policies. Portuguese SMEs have the opportunity to lead this transformation, contributing to reduced environmental impact and a more sustainable future for the agri-food sector.
