Abstract

Objectives: Older adults living in long-term care facilities are among the social groups most vulnerable to severe loneliness. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between loneliness and sociodemographic variables, depression, life satisfaction, and degree of functional (in)dependence in Portuguese older adults living in residential facilities for older adults. Method: Quantitative, observational, descriptive, and correlational study. The sample was convenience-based, comprising 102 elderly people (≥65 years) living in residential facilities for the elderly in central Portugal. The instruments used were: ALONE Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale, Life Satisfaction Scale, and Barthel Index. Inferential analysis was performed using the chi-square test, nonparametric tests (Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis), and Spearman's correlation. Results: The prevalence of severe loneliness was 55.9%. Severe loneliness was associated with the use of antidepressants, poorer self-perceived health, higher levels of depressive symptoms, lower life satisfaction, and greater functional dependence. Sociodemographic variables did not show significant relationships with loneliness. Conclusion: The high prevalence of loneliness highlighted the need for systematic assessments and intervention strategies aimed at preventing or mitigating loneliness in older adults living in nursing homes, promoting well-being and quality of life.
