Conceção de cuidados de Enfermagem no domínio do autoconceito

Abstract

This report documents the educational and clinical journey undertaken within the Master’s Degree in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing, reflecting the acquisition of specialist competencies in this field. The clinical practice focused on the assessment and intervention in self-concept among individuals with mental health care needs, particularly addressing self-esteem, body image, and personal identity. The clinical placement was carried out in three distinct settings: inpatient care for individuals in acute psychiatric decompensation, community-based mental health care, and specialized care responses. In each of these contexts, a comprehensive assessment of the individual and their needs was undertaken, followed by the planning and implementation of tailored nursing interventions. Theoretical frameworks such as Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model and Meleis’ Transitions Theory were integrated to support clinical reasoning. Additionally, a scoping review was conducted to map nursing interventions aimed at enhancing the self-concept of individuals with mental health care needs. The results evidenced significant improvements in individual's self-concept, promoting greater self-acceptance, recognition of individual strengths, and enhancement of self-esteem. The positive impact of these interventions reinforces the essential role of the Mental Health and Psychiatric Nurse specialist in promoting recovery and addressing the stigma associated with mental illness. This report highlights the importance of Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing in delivering differentiated, evidence-based care tailored to individual needs. This process enabled the consolidation of key competencies for clinical practice, fostering a person-centred approach grounded in theoretical knowledge and critical reflection on professional practice.
