MELHORAMENTO PRODUTIVO DA HERDADE DAS TAPADAS

Abstract

The Herdade das Tapadas, located in the municipality of Alter do Chão (Portalegre), has an agricultural area of 529.15 ha, where extensive livestock farming is practiced, on natural pastures on clean land and under cork oak forest cover. The only irrigated area is the vineyard with 13.6 ha, which uses an underground catchment. The construction of the Crato Multi-Purpose Hydraulic Plant, known as the Pisão dam, creates a unique opportunity for this agricultural holding, since around 68% of the area now benefits from water under pressure from the Alter do Chão do irrigation block. In this work, we study the possibility of installing an olive hedge grove or intensive almond grove in an area of 350 ha that will have guaranteed water for irrigation, currently with natural pastures and which has soils suitable for irrigation. The remaining exploration area maintains its current cultural occupation; the 13.6 ha vineyard and around 166 ha of pastures on clean land or under cover, for the continuation of the Stud Farm Telles de Carvalho. Based on the assessment of the economic-financial profitability carried out for the two permanent crops, it appears that the olive hedge grove is more interesting, as it presents a higher internal rate of profitability, a shorter return on investment period and greater production flow possibilities, despite the initial investment exceeding that of intensive almonds, by around 600,000 euros. The availability of water, in a large part of Herdade das Tapadas, will allow to move from extensive rainfed agriculture, which is not very profitable, to more intensive irrigated agriculture, which requires a high initial investment, but which ensures high profitability in the future.
