Abstract

Este artigo de revisão aborda a hipocalcemia subclínica em vacas leiteiras, destacando a falta de consenso nos protocolos de amostragem e critérios de classificação, o que pode explicar divergências nos resultados. Esta condição tem impacto significativo na produtividade e saúde dos animais e encontra-se associada a várias patologias pós-parto. Existem diferentes tipos de hipocalcemia subclínica, sendo a transitória, a retardada e a persistente, com diferentes implicações para a saúde. A hipocalcemia subclínica pode ser fisiológica no período pós-parto precoce, mas torna-se patológica se persistente ou crónica, indicando falhas na homeostasia do cálcio. A imunodepressão associada à hipocalcemia subclínica afeta a função dos neutrófilos, destacando a importância do cálcio na ativação do sistema imunitário. Estratégias nutricionais e de saúde, como dietas com diferença catião-anião (DCAD) negativa e suplementação de cálcio ou vitamina D, podem ajudar a reduzir o risco e a prevalência da hipocalcemia subclínica. No entanto, são necessárias mais pesquisas para melhorar os métodos de amostragem e compreender as correlações entre esta condição e outras patologias.
