Abstract

O cancro oral nos dias de hoje ainda apresenta uma alta taxa de mortalidade e mau prognóstico. Sendo uma das causas deste acontecimento o diagnóstico tardio. O carcinoma espinocelular representa a neoplasia mais comum da cavidade oral, representando cerca de 95% dos cancros orais. Quanto mais precoce for o diagnóstico deste tipo de cancro, melhor o seu prognóstico. Os profissionais de saúde devem ter a noção do que é o carcinoma espinocelular da cavidade oral, fazendo o seu correto diagnóstico. É essencial fomentar a educação aos pacientes, sobre a importância de consultar um médico ou médico dentista assim que os primeiros sintomas orais se evidenciem. É importante que o médico dentista durante a sua prática clínica, esteja ciente dos sinais, sintomas e de como pode e deve diagnosticar o carcinoma espinocelular da cavidade oral. A deteção e identificação precoce desta neoplasia é fundamental para a melhoria das taxas de mortalidade e morbilidade associadas a esta doença e, consequentemente, melhorar a qualidade de vida dos doentes. Concluindo, o que se pretende transmitir com esta dissertação é abordar a etiologia, formas de diagnóstico e de prevenção que evidenciem a importância do médico dentista na deteção precoce e prevenção do cancro oral.
