Abstract

O glaucoma designa um conjunto/grupo de condições intraoculares que cursam com um aumento da pressão intraocular (PIO). O aumento da PIO provoca diferentes lesões oculares, nomeadamente no nervo ótico e nas células ganglionares da retina (CGR), e como consequência destas alterações, cegueira parcial ou total e irreversível. Pode ser classificado em glaucoma congénito, primário e secundário. É fundamental diagnosticar e iniciar o tratamento desta doença o mais precocemente possível, de forma a impedir / atrasar a sua progressão. No tratamento teremos de considerar diferentes fatores, nomeadamente o tipo de glaucoma e o potencial visual do olho. A terapia médica com fármacos hipotensores é a mais usada para o controlo de glaucoma, embora estes possam ser usados isoladamente ou em combinação com técnicas cirúrgicas para controlo da pressão intraocular. O prognóstico depende do tipo de glaucoma e da fase da doença. Apesar do avanço nas terapias médicas e cirúrgicas, não existe atualmente cura para o glaucoma primário, e os cães afetados por esta neuropatia ótica desenvolvem cegueira. O prognóstico dos cães afetados por glaucoma secundário está dependente da capacidade de controlar a causa inicial e de reverter as lesões oculares já ocorridas
