Ozonoterapia no tratamento da periodontite

Abstract

A periodontite apresenta-se como a principal doença inflamatória dos tecidos de suporte dos dentes. Sabe-se que resulta da interação entre a microbiota subgengival, a resposta imune e inflamatória do hospedeiro e os fatores ambientais modificadores. A placa bacteriana está intimamente ligada com o risco de desenvolvimento de doenças periodontais. O ozono é usado para fins medicinais desde o século passado no tratamento de várias patologias. Pode apresentar-se sobre a forma gasosa, aquosa ou óleo, sendo-lhe reconhecidas características antimicrobianas, anti-inflamatórias, imunoestimuladoras, anti-hipóxicas e de biossíntese. O objetivo do trabalho é fornecer uma revisão geral sobre a molécula de ozono e as suas características químicas, mas também sobre as potencialidades da ozonoterapia relacionando-as com o tratamento da doença periodontal, usando como recurso diversos estudos in vitro e in vivo que nos dão informação sobre o sucesso ou o fracasso do seu uso na prática clínica.
