As alterações do esmalte em doentes celíacos

Abstract

A doença celíaca é uma doença crónica autoimune e constitui um dos tipos de intolerância alimentar mais prevalentes no mundo. A sua sintomatologia é muito variada, sendo inexistente em alguns casos, e nem sempre se restringe às manifestações gastrointestinais, o que torna o seu diagnóstico mais complicado. As manifestações orais são um dos sinais extraintestinais da doença celíaca, principalmente as alterações no esmalte dentário. A hipoplasia e a hipomineralização do esmalte têm sido muito associadas a esta doença, podendo constituir, por vezes, as suas únicas manifestações clínicas. Deste modo, os defeitos do esmalte podem servir de ferramenta de auxílio para diagnosticar a doença celíaca, especialmente as formas clinicamente menos evidentes desta doença. Muitas teorias têm sido propostas para explicar a etiologia destes defeitos, que ainda não se encontra totalmente esclarecida.
