Abstract

Introdução: A prática desportiva coloca o corpo humano em constante risco de lesão. A área do corpo mais vulnerável é a face existindo um maior risco de lesões orofaciais. A medicina dentária e o desporto estão geralmente interligados pelo traumatismo dentário. A medicina dentária desportiva não é apenas o tratamento de lesões dentárias e/ou orofaciais, mas também a sua prevenção e motivação dos atletas para garantir melhores resultados. Materiais e Métodos: 97 indivíduos com idades entre os 12 e os 17 anos de um total de 141 jogadores das equipas de basquetebol do Sport Lisboa e Benfica foram selecionados, avaliados e caracterizados por: idade, sexo, altura, posição em campo, história de traumatismos, utilização de protetor bucal, visitas ao médico dentista e indicações dadas pelos médicos dentistas. Resultados: A idade média foi de 13,68. De acordo com a posição em campo verificou-se um número maior de atletas na posição base (46,4%). De acordo com a história de traumatismo de cada atleta, verificou-se que 13,4% dos pacientes sofreram um traumatismo previamente. Em 13,4% o traumatismo mais frequente foi a fratura dentária não complicada (6,2%), representando 46,2% de todas as lesões no estudo. Discussão e Conclusão: Existe grande prevalência de lesões orofaciais em jogadores de basquetebol e uma baixa sensibilidade da importância da utilização de protetores bucais. É necessário educar os atletas e treinadores, através de médicos dentistas, para melhorar a medicina dentária desportiva. Para isso este profissional deve pertencer às equipas médicas atuando ao nível da prevenção e melhoria da performance desportiva.
