O Processo de Paz: Análise Histórica da Política Americana Relativamente à Questão Palestiniana

Abstract

Desde a Segunda Guerra que os Estados Unidos têm mantido uma presença activa no Médio Oriente por razões económicas e estratégicas de peso. A partir da guerra de 1967, Washington tem estado envolvido na procura de uma solução pacífica para o contlito israelo-árabe. Nalguns momentos, os Estados Unidos providenciaram tanto uma dinâmica como suporte logístico eficiente a todo este esforço diplomático e tal tem sido o processo de paz no seu melhor. A maior parte do tempo, contudo, o processo de paz tem sido pouco mais do que um mecanismo que mascara a passagem do tempo. Na realidade, este processo tem servido por regra para adiar uma solução satisfatória e global para os Palestinianos e para contentar as pretensões dos vizinhos árabes, nomeadamente Síria e Líbano. A falta de empenhamento dos Estados Unidos em favor daqueles é consequência da «relação especial» que une os EUA a Israel e do funcionamento do aparelho político americano, especialmente do Congresso.
