Abstract

As doenças orais encontram-se entre as doenças crónicas mais comuns e representam um problema de saúde pública, devido à sua prevalência e ao impacto que têm nos indivíduos e na sociedade. A saúde oral tem grande influência sobre a saúde geral do indivíduo, tendo efeito noutros sistemas do organismo. A gravidez revela-se um dos estados de maior alteração a nível hormonal, o que expõe a gestante ao risco de desenvolver infeções orais, nomeadamente a doença periodontal. A doença periodontal caracteriza-se por uma doença infeciosa, causada, predominantemente, por bactérias gram negativas anaeróbias, que resulta na destruição dos tecidos periodontais. A doença periodontal na gravidez tem vindo a ser associada ao aumento do risco de parto prematuro e baixo peso à nascença. O parto prematuro e o baixo peso à nascença constituem fatores de risco para a mortalidade e morbilidade neonatal e infantil. A promoção da saúde e a prevenção das doenças orais, nomeadamente da doença periodontal, podem tornar-se determinantes na prevenção de efeitos adversos na gravidez.
