Candida glabrata um patogénio emergente?

Abstract

Nas últimas décadas as infecções fúngicas têm aumentado exponencialmente. Apesar de Candida albicans (C. albicans) continuar a ser a espécie isolada com maior frequência, as espécies não albicans tem vindo a proliferar rapidamente. Candida glabrata (C. glabrata) é uma das espécies emergentes como patogénio oportunista humano, sendo responsável maioritariamente por candidoses invasivas em pacientes imunocomprometidos. A percentagem de resistência aos antifúngicos nesta espécie é superior às outras do género Candida, por isso torna-se imperativo um melhor conhecimento dos seus mecanismos de virulência. Com a evolução das técnicas disponíveis para análise, os estudos efectuados revelam dados mais pormenorizados que demonstram as grandes diferenças entre C. glabrata e C. albicans, e as inúmeras características que C. glabrata partilha com Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae). Nesta revisão faço um balanço dos dados recolhidos até à data, na esperança de ser possível uma melhor compreensão dos mecanismos de resistência de C. glabrata, assim como outra informação que permita um melhor controlo e tratamento de infecções por esta espécie.
