Microbioma endodôntico

Abstract

A endodontia estuda as patologias da polpa, do sistema dos canais radiculares e dos tecidos periapicais. Esta especialidade odontológica está estreitamente relacionada com a microbiologia uma vez que as infeções endodônticas são provocadas por microrganismos que alteram o equilíbrio do sistema polpa-raiz-dente. A heterogeneidade fenotípica e genética confere aos microrganismos uma capacidade de adaptação ao hospedeiro que se reflete num potencial patogénico único. Através dos métodos moleculares modernos de identificação e caracterização dos microrganismos, mais evoluídos que os tradicionais dependentes de cultura, conhece-se hoje muito mais sobre o Microbioma endodôntico. Por exemplo, sabe-se hoje que existe uma multiplicidade bacteriana superior e um perfil mais diversificado da comunidade bacteriana nas infeções endodônticas persistentes versus infeções primárias e, também, que a microbiota do mesmo dente varia em complexidade e diversidade consoante a localização apical ou coronal. Graças aos avanços nas técnicas de diagnóstico microbiológico tem-se conseguido otimizar as decisões médicas sobre o tratamento endodôntico apropriado no sentido de controlar e eliminar a infeção. Neste trabalho efetua-se uma revisão sobre o estado da arte da etiologia, patogénese, diagnóstico e tratamento das infeções endodônticas microbianas.
