Abstract

This study aims to measure the quality of life in people with hearing loss that was characterized by air tone thresholds average loss. This transversal, quantitative and descriptive study conducted from May to October of 2010, collected a sample of 328 people (47.0% male), with medium age ± standard deviation of 45.82 ± 12.93 years, appointed to the audiology facilities of CHTS-UPA, EPE in Penafiel Porto, to evaluation and interview. It was used the SF-36v2 in Portuguese, as an instrument to measure Quality of Life, complemented by an identification, social, demographical and clinical data questionnaire. Results: Individuals with hearing loss who joined the study sample revealed worst perceptions of the State of Health than the self-perceptions of the sample elements that constituted the reference values, especially in the dimensions of General Health of the component Physical Health and dimensions Social Function and Mental Health of the Mental Health Component. Conclusions: Hearing loss is negatively associated with high health, promoting differences between subjects with and without hearing loss, in SF-36v2 dimensions of Physical and Social Functioning, General and Mental Health, Role-Physical and Role-Emotional and Vitality. Hearing evaluation, hearing loss prevention and hearing rehabilitation may contribute for an improvement in social functioning and population well-being status.
