Abstract

This document is part of a thesis for a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, in collaboration with ProzisX software team. The main objective of the project is to study an approach to body composition assessment using the natural body impedance. After the state-of-the-art analysis, the main methods used for measuring body impedance were identified, as well as electrical modelsof the human body proposed over the last decades. The system studied in this work was based on the use of the BH66F2663 microprocessor, together with an 8-electrode architecture, and involved measurements with 700 different individuals, following two diferent configurations and three signal frequencies, being validated through comparison with reference methods and data collected from the literature. Throughout the report, 59 linear regression models are presented as a way of estimating fatfree mass, body water volume, waist circumference and hip circumference. Two algorithms are also proposed for detecting heart rate using body impedance variation. However, some limitations of the work and future prospects are pointed out, including the expansion of the database, the search for non-linear relationships and the integration of the system with a mobile application.
