A importância da variabilidade

Abstract

Quando fui convidado para apresentar uma comunicação, na cerimónia comemorativa do 129º aniversário do Instituto Superior de Contabilidade e Administração do Porto, de imediato pensei que a tarefa para a qual estava a ser convidado era um complicado desafio. A primeira etapa, talvez a mais delicada, consistia em decidir o tema que deveria abordar, uma vez que teria uma plateia cientificamente heterogénea e, verdade seja dita, a Estatística não é um tema que seduza facilmente os leigos. A primeira tentação seria falar sobre sondagens (estávamos a acabar de sair de um processo eleitoral). Mas, ou escolheria falar de um conjunto de banalidades percetíveis por todos os que formavam a minha plateia, ou teria que optar por uma comunicação técnica e científica, o que, certamente, iria entediar aqueles a quem a Estatística e a Matemática pouco dizem. Então, tomando em consideração de que a razão de ser da minha profissão (professor) é, acima de tudo, o aluno, lembrei-me que poderia exemplificar como é possível fazer uma aula de apresentação de uma unidade curricular de Estatística com o intuito de motivar os estudantes logo desde o início, mostrando que o medo e o receio com que eles, a priori, entram na primeira aula de Estatística, afinal, não tem um verdadeiro motivo para existir.
