Abstract

CONTEXTO: O empowerment é uma filosofia exigível às pessoas com doença crónica como a diabetes de forma a superar as exigências da convivência diária com a própria doença. Por sua vez, o apoio social é um recurso cujo suporte informativo, emocional e instrumental, assume um papel de relevo na promoção da autogestão da doença crónica, contribuindo para o desenvolvimento da capacitação das pessoas para ultrapassar os obstáculos com que se deparam no seu dia-a-dia. OBJETIVO: Avaliar se o apoio social prediz o empowerment. METODOLOGIA: O estudo descritivo foi realizado numa amostra não probabilística constituída com 150 pessoas com diabetes acompanhadas em unidades de saúde de cuidados de saúde primários, na Consulta de Diabetes. A média de idades foi de 66,85 anos, a maioria casados/em união de facto, aposentados, com prevalência do 1º ciclo do ensino básico. Na colheita de dados utilizou-se o Diabetes Empowerment Scale (Anderson, Funnell, Fitzgerald & Marrero, 2000) e a Escala de Apoio Social (Matos e Ferreira, 2000). RESULTADOS: A maioria dos participantes pontuou com elevado empowerment e que o apoio social foi percecionado como bom. A escolaridade e a profissão estão positivamente relacionados com o empowerment. O apoio social revelou-se um preditor positivo da capacitação, explicando 17,1% da sua variabilidade, constatando-se que quanto melhor o apoio social, maior a capacitação manifestada pelas pessoas com diabetes. CONCLUSÕES: Englobar a gestão dos recursos de apoio social na Consulta de Enfermagem/Diabetes assume-se como uma estratégia promotora do empoderamento/capacitação das pessoas com diabetes.
