A arte como terapia : perspetiva dos facilitadores

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perspectives of artistic expression facilitators about their professional activity, namely the way they intervene, the resulting outcomes, as well as the factors that aid and hinder the intervention process. The sample was composed of four artistic expression facilitators, which practice in varying contexts, from a hospital to a socio-occupational unit, and with differing populations, such as adults with mental health problems or older people within a normal aging process. By using a semi-structured interview, a thematic analysis was conducted, from which four categories emerged: characteristics, outcomes, facilitators, and obstacles. The approaches used vary from visual arts, to theatre and dance and highlight the focus on the person, to which the intervention must be suited. All of the interviewees identified benefits to the clients, whether psychological, behavioral or social. Globally, the results suggest arts-based interventions are effective responses within a holistic approach to health, contributing to the promotion of clients’ wellbeing and skill development.
