Not even COVID killed the radio star

Abstract

With the outburst of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, Radio was quickly forced to react, in order to adapt its content production processes and broadcasting to reach a public thereafter with new routines, daily schedules and listening habits. The present study analyses the new solutions offered by Radio Renascença and its primetime morning show As três da manhã, throughout the first year of the pandemic context, to understand the main transformations of the channel during the period of social distance. The study draws on specialized scientific literature on the social and emotional role played by radio during times of crisis, on a set of original semi-structured interviews carried out with several of Renascença´s professionals, and on a content analysis of all the new formats offered by the broadcaster, to conclude how the COVID-19 pandemic boosted production creativity and radio technological capacity.
