Abstract

The Spirit, in Rom 8, is the center of Paul’s attention. Living under the law and living under the Spirit, in Paul’s letter to the Romans, are confronted as distinct regimes, the first as a regime where curse and death reign, powerless to guarantee the believer’s salvation; the second as an environment of blessing and life, since the Spirit triumphs over the flesh and gives freedom. To live under the Spirit is to live «in Christ», to live for eternal life. The Spirit intercedes for all believers with the Father, who knows beforehand all their needs. Through the Spirit, all men and all creation are called to resurrection, to eternal life in Christ and liberated from the power of death and condemnation. Through the Spirit we enter into the life of the Son of God and enjoy a new identity - we are sons and heirs of God! It is this Spirit who assures man of hope and glory, freeing him from the contingencies of the world, of the flesh, of sin. For the Spirit is the conductor, the guide, the defender, the witness of believers and the way of access to God. In this paper we seek to study how the Spirit is involved in the work of justification and sanctification of man, He who frees man from the hardening of the heart, from being closed in on himself, so that he may know the love of God.
