Abstract

This report is part of a Master's Degree study plan in Medical-Surgical Nursing Specialization in People in Critical Care Setting, from the Catholic University of Portugal Institute of Health Sciences of Lisbon. Its main purpose is to describe a nurse’s personal and professional growth in the development of specialized skills in an area of specialization. Bearing in mind the need to develop and acquire such skills, I chose to complete the Curricular Unit “Final Stage and Report”in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). My own objectives, delineated at the beginning of the internship, focused on the acquisition and development of specialized skills in caring for people in the critical setting of the ICU and their family, as well as in the use of comfort as a strategy . The main focus of my intervention was in the comfort of the person / family respecting their uniqueness and individuality, and taking into account their own beliefs and values. This experience contributed to deepen my scientific and technical knowledge and to develop and improve my skills: of knowing how to be and how to do, as a nurse, when caring for a person in critical care and their family, providing high quality of care, aiming to recover health status as soon as possible and ensuring the satisfaction of their comfort needs.
