Abstract

This dissertation is focused on study the mural painting of the XV and XVI centuries in Portugal and in particular, ten study cases from the Diocesis of Bragança-Miranda, in municipalities of Miranda do Douro and Mogadouro, in Bragança. With this study we aim to highlight the evolution of the conservation-restoration of mural painting in Portugal and to understand what has been happening to this heritage and what are the emerging needs. Since we don’t have a complete inventory that includes the conservation-restoration point of view, it is important to update the information in survey sheets about the condition of mural painting today. Accordingly, we tested a model sheet in ten studies from the region of Miranda do Douro and Mogadouro, in order to create the basis for the integration of this approach in future inventories of Portuguese mural painting. With these study cases, we have been able to understand the alteration processes of the mural paintings and demonstrate how the building conditions affect their decorative coverings, considering the risks to which they are, or will be. We also considered the condition of these paintings and their spaces, as well as the levels of priority for intervention. Concerning the development of strategies for the safeguarding of these mural painting, and based on the research produced by several experts, we found the lack of a complete and updated project for inventorying and safeguarding of this corpus.
