Abstract

A intervenção permitiu devolver a leitura original à obra, restituindo a harmonia do programa decorativo do espaço original.

The internship project took place at the Casa do Vinho Verde know as Silva Monteiro palace, which belongs to the Viticulture Commission of the Vinho Verde Region, located in Porto, under which a conservation and restoration of the interior coatings of the building was carried out. The internship work focused on the conservation and restoration of the stucco lustro wall coatings imitating stone (marble) of the second-floor hall corridor, chronologically framed between the late nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century. The most important anomaly in these coatings was the oxidation of the final protective varnish layer. In the first contact with the artwork the main steps were previous photographic record, diagnosis of the condition, damage map of the set of walls and selection of those to be restored. In a second phase we carried out the sampling for analysis, the treatment proposal and, finally, the intervention. Different gels were used giving preference to low toxicity solvents according to the Paolo Cremonesi’s methodology. The conservation-restoration work was undertaken within the Conservator-Restorer Code of Ethics. It has been decided to begin the intervention on the wall coating (painting) poorly preserved. Since these are wall coatings with historical and aesthetic values, several important initial records were made considering the relevance of this integrated heritage. This internship allowed to restore circa of 80% of the walls of the 2nd floor vestibule, in a period of three months, having been fully fulfilled the following objectives: cleaning, filling of the support and surface, punctual chromatic reintegration and final protection coating application. On a personal level, the internship was very important for the acquisition of specific and tranversal skills in the area of conservation and restoration. The intervention allowed to recover the original aesthetic reading of the painting, as well to restore the harmony of the decorative program of the room.
