Abstract

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the determinants that influence the level of total debt, of short term-debt and of medium and long term-debt of small and medium size enterprises of accommodation, based on studies about the theme capital structure. This study is based on a sample of 724 companies that have their headquarters in Porto, between 2012 and 2017. This analysis is performed in the form of panel data, through the fixed effects model, and the results are analyzed according to the forecasts made by the trade-off theory and the pecking order theory. We concluded that the variables tangibility and size have a positive influence on total debt and the variables profitability and uniqueness have a negative effect on total debt. Regarding medium and long term-debt, the variables tangibility, size and effective tax rate have a positive effect, while the variables profitability and uniqueness have a negative influence on medium and long term-debt. It seems that none of the variables have an influence on short term-debt.
