Abstract

Introduction: Malocclusion may be caused by parafunctional habits, their severity depends on the frequency, duration and intensity with which they are performed. The continuous practice of wind instruments, depending on the position of the mouthpiece, can cause undesirable tooth movement which will influence in a unique way the constituents of the oral cavity. Objectives: Evaluation of the occlusion in musicians that play wind instruments, in order to verifying if the specific adaptation of the instrument to the oral cavity influences the development of malocclusions, similarly to oral habits. Evaluation subjective of signs and symptoms of TMD. Material and methods: This is a cross-sectional, descriptive and observational non-experimental study, with 39 individuals who practiced wind musical instruments, aged between 18 and 48 years. Results: From the sample of 39 individuals, 23 (59.0%) were female and 16 (41.0%) were male, with a mean age of 23.4 ± 5.9 years. This study was inconclusive regarding the dental movements caused by the practice of wind musical instruments, since all the results obtained regarding the overjet, overbite, molar and canine class, deviation of the middle line and asymmetry of the mentus, did not present significant statistical evidence. Concerning the signs and symptoms of TMD, it has been demonstrated that in certain classes of musical instruments of wind, there can be signs and symptoms, although not in statistically significant way either. Conclusions: The practice of musical instruments does not influence the development of malocclusion. Nevertheless, it is important to take into account that the oral cavity is not composed only by the teeth, and in certain classes of instruments of wind there can be signs and symptoms of TMD.
