Qualidade da informação e endividamento

Abstract

This paper addresses the relationship between the quality of financial statements of firms and debt. In this sense, the purpose of empirical analysis is to prove that firms that have higher debt tend to produce higher quality financial information. Based on that, a selected review of the major theories of earnings management is made. As we know, the Portuguese economy is mainly composed by small firms that depend on banks for their financing. In such a context there is a higher incentive for firms to do earnings management in order to grant the funds that they need with the best conditions. To test this intuition, I developed a methodology based on accruals quality as a measure of quality of financial statements. The results confirm the existence of a linear relation, although not statistically significant, between the quality of financial statements and some of the variables of the empirical model, such as long term debt and firms´ size.
