Abstract

Este estudo tem como finalidade estudar a relação entre a depressão, o défice cognitivo e o suporte social no idoso. Trata-se de um estudo correlacional e transversal. Todos os idosos da amostra usufruíam de apoio domiciliar técnico-profissional. Os instrumentos utilizados foram:“Mini-Mental State Examination” (Folstei, Folstein & McHugh, 1975); “Escala de Depressão Geriátrica” (Yesavage et col. (1983) e “Escala de Satisfação com o Suporte Social” (Ribeiro, 1999). Os resultados revelaram que existe uma relação positiva entre a depressão e o défice cognitivo, ou seja, quanto maior é o défice cognitivo, maior é a sintomatologia depressiva. Verificou-se que quanto maior for a satisfação total com os amigos, a intimidade e a satisfação com a família, menores serão os sintomas depressivos. Verificamos ainda, que são as mulheres que apresentam níveis mais elevados de sintomas depressivos e que são os homens que registam uma maior satisfação com os amigos. Outro resultado mostra que são os analfabetos que apresentam níveis mais elevados de sintomas depressivos e que são os não analfabetos que registam um melhor estado mental. Os resultados do presente estudo relevaram a importância da necessidade de intervenção ao nível das variáveis psicológicas no idoso.

This study aims to study the relationship between depression, cognitive impairment and social support. This is a correlational and cross. All seniors in the sample enjoyed home support technical professional. The instruments used were: “Mini-Mental State Examination” (Folstein, Folsteis & McHugh, 1975), “Geriatric Depression Scale” (Yesavage et al, 1983) and “Satisfaction Scale Social Support” (Ribeiro, 1999). Results showed that there is a positive relationship between depression and cognitive impairment, the greater the cognitive impairment, the greater the depressive symptoms. It was also found that the higher overall satisfaction whit friends, intimacy and satisfaction with family, the lower depressive symptoms. Verified yet, it is women who have high levels of depressive symptoms and, that men who are experiencing greater satisfaction whit friends. Another result shows that the illiterate are showing levels higher depressive symptoms and who are not illiterate that record a better mental state. Results of the present study revealed the importance of the need for intervention at the level of psychological variables in the elderly.
