Abstract

ABSTRACT: Female genital self-image (FGSI) is a major factor in women's sexual health, function, behavior, and satisfaction. Studies regarding predictors of FGSI remain scarce. The main purpose of this study was to assess the relationships between FGSI and the sexual double standard, female genital anatomy knowledge and the frequency of masturbation and orgasm in a sample of 604 predominantly portuguese women (Mage = 28). The average FGSI score was positive (M = 27.9; DP = 5.60; [7-35]). Hierarchical multiple regression analysis revealed the predictors of FGSI: education, religious practice, area of residence, orgasm frequency with a partner, masturbation frequency in the last 12 months, masturbation frequency during adolescence, female genital anatomy knowledge and sexual double standard jointly accounted for 27% of the variance in FGSI. Orgasm frequency with a partner, masturbation frequency in last 12 months and sexual double standard adherence showed the greatest coefficients (β = 0.32; β = 0.18 and β = -0.23, respectively) and most significant relationships with FGSI, p < .001. Further knowledge on this topic enables discussion and encourages the development of preventive and interventional strategies that may promote women's sexual and psychological well-being.
