Introdução: A imagem corporal é uma experiência complexa e multidimensional, que afeta diversos aspetos do funcionamento psicossocial e da qualidade de vida do ser humano, pois engloba fatores psicológicos, sociais, culturais e biológicos, que determinam subjetivamente como o indivíduo se observa a si próprio, como considera que é visto, e como vê os outros. Este estudo teve como objetivos verificar: i) Se existem associações entre Imagem Corporal, Satisfação Conjugal e Ajustamento ao Envelhecimento, ii) Se a Imagem Corporal tem efeito na Satisfação Conjugal, iii) Se a Imagem Corporal e a Satisfação Conjugal influenciam o Ajustamento ao Envelhecimento. Método: 193 participantes, com uma média de idades de 72.12 (DP=5.608) anos, responderam ao Mini Exame do Estado Mental (MMSE), ao questionário dos dados Sociodemográficos e de Saúde, ao Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2), à escala de Avaliação da Satisfação em Áreas Conjugais (EASAVIC), e à escala de Ajustamento ao Envelhecimento (ATAS). Resultados: Existem associações entre Imagem Corporal, Satisfação Conjugal e Ajustamento ao Envelhecimento. A Imagem Corporal e a Satisfação Conjugal (β=.35; t(119)=5.222; p=.000) têm uma relação positiva e significativa. A Imagem Corporal (β=.229; t(189)=3.051; p=.003) e a Satisfação Conjugal (β=.148; t(189)=2.071; p=.040), são ambas preditores significativos do Ajustamento ao Envelhecimento. A Imagem Corporal tem um efeito moderador na relação entre a Satisfação Conjugal e o Ajustamento ao Envelhecimento. Discussão: A influência positiva da Imagem Corporal para a Satisfação Conjugal, e da Imagem Corporal e da Satisfação Conjugal para o Ajustamento ao Envelhecimento, deve ser considerada para intervenções futuras ajustadas às necessidades dos idosos.

Introduction: The body image is a complex and multidimensional experience, which affects aspects of the psychosocial and welfare of human beings, because it encompasses psychological, sociological, cultural and biological factors, that subjectively determine how the individual perceives himself, believes to be perceived, and how he sees others. This study had as objectives to verify: i) if we can associate Body Image, Marital Satisfaction, and Aging Adjustment, ii) if the Body Image has an effect on the Marital Satisfaction, iii) if the Body Image and the Marital Satisfaction influence the Aging Adjustment. Method: 193 participants, with an average age of 72.12 (DP=5.608) years, have answered the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Sociodemographic and Health data questionnaire, the Body Appreciation Scale-2 (BAS-2), the Scale of Evaluation of the Satisfaction on the Marital Areas of Life (EASAVIC), and the Adjustment to Aging scale (ATAS). Results: There is a link between Body Image, Marital Satisfaction and Adjustment to Aging. The Body Image and the Marital Satisfaction (β=.35; t(119)=5.222; p=.000) have a positive and significant relation. The Body Image (β=.229; t(189)=3.051; p=.003) and the Marital Satisfaction (β=.148; t(189)=2.071; p=.040), are both significant predictors of the Adjustment to Aging. The Body Image has a moderator effect in the relation between the Marital Satisfaction and the Adjustment to Aging. Discussion: The positive influence of the Body Image to the Marital Satisfaction, and of the Body Image and the Marital Satisfaction to the Adjustment to Aging, must be considered in future interventions adjusted to the needs of seniors.
