Abstract

The present study aimed to evaluate whether certain personality characteristics may influence the acceptability of a co-worker with visible body adornments. Additionally, it aimed to assess whether this acceptability varies depends on the type of work (pre-present or non-present) and the type of rewards (collective or individual commissions). This research was based on the study Miller, McGlashan e Eure (2008). The sample of this study consisted of 257 participants, 153 female and 104 male, aged be-tween 16 and 66 years. Through a scenario created by Miller and Nicols (2008), the presence or absence of customer contact variable and the reward distribution variable were manipulated. In order to assess acceptability, was used the 3-item scale by the same authors. To measure personality, we used the 44-item BFI scale by John, Donahue e Kentle (1991), adapted and translated by Vanessa Simões (2018). The results show that the acceptability levels of a colleague with body adornment are higher when the type of work is non-presential. Although not significant, acceptability levels are higher when rewards are individual compared to collective rewards. There is also no significant interaction effect of the type of customer contact (in person or not) and the type of commissions (individual or collective) on acceptability by co-workers. Additionally, the greater the number of tattoos and pierc-ings held by the participant, the better their peer acceptance with a visible tattoo or piercing. Finally, the results tell us that only the "Kindness" personality trait has a significant and positive association with acceptance. It is concluded that the rejection of a co-worker with visible piercings and tattoos occurs es-sentially when work involves face-to-face contact with clients, that kindness is the only personality dimension that can facilitate acceptance of a co-worker and that the presence of piercings and tattoos in one's own assists in accepting a colleague who holds them.
