The relation between body ownership and sense of agency: an eeg study

Abstract

A question still debated within cognitive neuroscience is whether and how the experience of one’s own body contributes to the feeling of agency. In order to investigate the role of body ownership in conscious awareness of willed actions we integrated two signatures (i.e., an ad hoc questionnaire and the sensory attenuation paradigm) of sense of agency (‘‘this action is due to my own will”) within the rubber hand illusion (RHI) paradigm. The main finding of our study is that embodiment over a fake hand (induced by the RHI) triggered an illusory agency over a one shot movement only at the implicit level. Specifically, when the fake (embodied) hand pressed a button delivering an electrical stimulus to the participant’s body, the stimulus intensity was attenuated, exactly as it happened when the own hand actually delivered the stimulus. Most importantly, we were able to provide physiological evidence by implementing the EEG technique. However, even though differences obtained in the ERP amplitude of the N1 and P2 components were consistent with behavioral results, the movement was not misattributed to participant’s will (explicit level).
