Abstract

ABSTRACT: The purpose of this study was to explore the hypothesis that the reasoning about intentions can be differentiated into several cultural contexts. Also can be influenced by many types of reason for actions, as well the desires and obligations. We think the children, once are inserted into diferente societies, they think about values and socials standards in many ways. In order to explore the hypothesis of differentiation on reasoning about the intentions, a change in intentions task was used, in a sample of children, 50 of them were portuguese (individualista culture) and the remaining were Cape Verdean (colective culture), six and eight years old. The reasoning was made through questions about the theory of mind and the impact of several intentions was tested through the two conditions desire-for-obligation and obligation-for-desire. The data analysis did not show any significant difference about the reasoning that the children have about the various intentions (whishes and obligations), when these belong to diferent cultures. However, significant diferences were found between inferences number of correct falses beliefs, between the six and eight years old children, as well the diferent cultures. It was noticed the six years old children make more errors than the eight years old, such as the children belonging to a collective culture, these commit more errors, when doing interferences of falses beliefs. These results are discussed and articulated with a factors’ set, described in litterature, capable of influence the false belief development’s time and concepts, these related to mind’s theory and, still, about how the children associate on the diferent intentions.
