O envolvimento paterno em casais divorciados.

Abstract

ABSTRACT: Significant alterations in the structure of traditional families, especially in what concerns the expectations on the roles of parental figures, have generated a great amount of studies about the paternal involvement in the family. Nevertheless, there have been few studies made about the involvement of the father in divorced families. This study‟s main objective is to verify if there are any differences in the case of divorced couples in the following domains: Direct and Indirect Care, Nurture and Discipline, and Entertainment and Leisure outside the home. 185 divorced couples have participated in this study whose children frequented schools in the Lisbon District. Individual characteristics of both parents were taken into account, such as academic qualifications and age (the mothers were in average 33 years old and the fathers 36), as was the gender of the children, for example. The results observed show that the paternal involvement varies according to the type of activity. The nurturing and care chores are usually provided by the mother, while the social activities are shared by both parents. It was verified that, according to the mothers‟ opinions, the better the fathers‟ academic qualifications were, the greater was his involvement in the Indirect Care of the children. According to the mothers, the fathers tend to get more involved with the male children‟s Nurture and Discipline. It was also verified that this opinion was shared both by the fathers and the mothers.
