A utilização de terapias alternativas e complementares. Um estudo exploratório

Abstract

The use of Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) has increased worldwide, and Portugal accompanied this growth. Here presented is an exploratory study on the use that people make of CAT in the Great Lisbon area, through a survey consisting on a sample of 174 subjects (65 men and 108 women) with an average age of 39 years, mainly with university formation (71.2%). The subjects were divided into two independent groups (users and non-users). It was intended to characterize the preferred users for CAM and each therapy, in socio-demographic and medical issues, and establish correlations between different therapies. Significant differences based on gender were found on the use of CAM and age was also significative to the use of some types of CAM. Dietary and Natural Supplements were the most used CAM. There were no strong correlations between use of different therapies, grouped or not.
