Cuidados, cuidadores e relações de cuidado

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The research about the caregiving, have privileged the negative impacts rather the positive ones, not covering the complexity of informal care for an elderly family member with Alzheimer’s disease. The difficulties and satisfactions in providing care at home, to a family member with dementia were studied determining the best strategies to fulfill the needs and promote psychological well-being of caregivers. Thirty caregivers of elderly dementia members of their family cooperated in a semistructured interview and also completed the Psychological Well-Being Scale as well as the Carer’s Assessment of Difficulties Index and the Carer’s Assessment of Satisfactions Index. It was concluded that the satisfactions deriving from the provision of care are present and coexist alongside the difficulties, and that caregivers with better perception of psychological well-being will have more satisfaction in the performance of tasks, which has implications for intervention. It is proposed the implementation of a training program of emotional competence.
