Ansiedade e suporte social em grávidas imigrantes

Abstract

ABSTRACT: The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the levels of anxiety state-trait and levels of satisfaction with the social support of immigrant and Portuguese pregnant women, based on their social and demographic characteristics. The study was based on 60 pregnant women, 30 immigrants and 30 Portuguese. Mothers aged between 18 and 36 years old, most of them going to the consultation at Primary Health Care Centres in Lisbon region. The following instruments were applied: social and demographic questionnaire, “State-Trait Anxiety Inventory” by Spielberg, translated by Silva & Santos (1997), and “Escala de Satisfação com o Suporte Social – E.S.S.S.” by Pais Ribeiro (1999). The purpose was to characterize the sample and evaluate the state-anxiety, trait-anxiety and the satisfaction levels with the social support, mainly with friends, family, intimacy and social activities. The results suggest the presence of high levels of state-trait anxiety in immigrant pregnant women and lower levels of satisfaction with social support. The experience of a pregnancy in an immigration context, appears to be one of a risk factor causing possible derangements and emotional disturbances
