Ansiedade, auto-conceito e dificuldades escolares em crianças maltratadas

Abstract

ABSTRACT: This work has as its primary goal to study self-concept, anxiety and learning difficulties in children victim of ill-treatment. The study sample was composed by nine children, with ages between eight and twelve, from both sexes, who were victim of ill-treatment and institutionalized afterwards. The tests chosen to be used in the study were: the Reynolds& Richmond’s Revised Childrens Manifest Anxiety Scale-RCMAS (1978) with normative studies of Fonseca (1992) and Dias& Gonçalves (1999); the Susan Harter´s Self Perception Profile for Children specifically adapted to the Portuguese population by Alves Martins, Peixoto, Mata, Monteiro (1995); diagnose charts of Learning Disabilities at Writing and Calculus level by Helena Serra (2005); Reading Test “Decifrar” by Salgueiro (2002); free drawing; CAT. Regarding anxiety, except in two cases (a child from the 2nd grade and a child from the 3rd grade) in which the scores were very low, all other seven children (two from the 2nd grade, one from the 3rd grade and 4 from the 4th grade) reached very high levels. About self-concept, the children from the 2nd and 3rd grades had scores above the average, while the scores of the 4th grade children were below the average. As for learning difficulties, only two of the nine children didn’t presented any difficulties regarding reading; both in writing and calculus, four of the nine children have showed learning difficulties.
