O presente artigo pretende destacar a importância do suporte social e das redes sociais na população idosa, reflectindo sobre as características das redes sociais (formais e informais) que têm ao seu dispor e analisar de que forma as mesmas se podem articular, com vista a constituírem-se como fontes de apoio efectivas para esta população. Pretende-se igualmente reflectir sobre uma possível complementaridade das redes de suporte informal e formal junto da população idosa, a qual, à medida que envelhece vai necessitando cada vez mais de cuidados diferenciados e integrados. Pode inferir-se do presente estudo, que o papel pró-activo que o indivíduo desempenha no seio do seu processo de envelhecimento, dentro da dinâmica do conjunto de condições pessoais e sociais em que se inscreve, potencia a oportunidade e adequabilidade da vivência de um envelhecimento bem sucedido, onde o suporte social e as redes sociais desempenham sem dúvida, um papel fulcral.
ABSTRACT: This article seeks to highlight the importance of social support and social network in the elderly, reflecting upon the formal and informal social networks characteristics at their disposal and consider how it can be articulated in order to be effective sources of support to this population. The article also intends to reflect upon a possible complementary of informal and formal support networks among the elderly population, which will need increasingly differentiated and integrated care as they grow older . It can be inferred from this study that the proactive role that the individual plays in his own aging process, within the dynamic range of personal and social conditions in which it is included, increases the opportunity and suitability of a successful aging experience, where social support and social networks undoubtedly play a key role.
