Abstract

ABSTRACT------ Breast cancer is a malignant neoplasm responsible for the largest number of deaths in women worldwide. According Regis & Simões (2005), a woman with breast cancer becomes a person severely hit physically, psychologically and socially, both by the disease as by the treatments. The present research is a cross-sectional study, exploratory and descriptive. It has as objective to try assess and to describe the satisfaction of body image and the marital relationship in a group of 27 mastectomized women, where 10 of these women passed through a breast reconstruction. The participants were aged between 32 and 66 years and mostly married. The instruments used were: Quiz socio demographic, scale of body image "as I deal with my body", scale of marital relationship "ERC". It turned out that although the differences were not significant, women who underwent a mastectomy longest have a better marital relationship and a better body image. Women who had breast reconstruction, have higher rates on the scale of marital relationships and body image (body pre-morbid). It was also verified, that women that have a better body image, have better marital relationships.
