ABSTRACT: This article adresses the theoretical origins of the Social Support emphasizing the broad range of its concepts, functions and components. The Social Networks, the quality and quantity of Support and Instruments to measure it are also analysed. Gender, Civil Status, Etnicity and Socio-economic Status are refered as the most current variables studied on the Social Support arena.

Este artigo faz uma abordagem das origens teóricas do Suporte Social, realçando a diversidade dos seus conceitos, funções e componentes. As Redes Sociais, a qualidade de suporte e instrumentos de medição são igualmente analisados. O género, o estado civil, a etnia e o estatuto socio- -económico são referidos como as variáveis mais comumente utilizadas na investigação do suporte social.
