Abstract

ABSTRACT: The principal aim to this study is known the representation of the friendship relationship held to the adults with intellectual disabilities. In order to find answers to this goal a qualitative study was developed. For this study were chosen 30 adults with intellectual disabilities, with ages between 25-35 years old, who attended an Occupational Activities Center (CAO). A semi-structured interview was used as instrument. The evaluation of the concluded data was qualitatively treated by the content analysis technique. Then it was examined the same data concerning to the literature. According to the examined results it could be concluded that the adults with intellectual disabilities in spite of presenting difficulties maintain and establish ties of friendship, due to several hurdle (e.g. parents), they keep the concepts of friendship, friend and best buddie, similar to what occurs with the adults with typical development. Once there are very few studies about this issue, in particularly in this age level, it is very relevant to develop studies that research this field, in order that the responsible (parents, professionals, among others) know the importance and the reasons for which the adults in those conditions need to establish ties of friendship, allowing them easily the creation and maintenance of these ties and reducing some of the obstacles created.
